Winter Dawn - Tuesday 6th January 2015

Yesterday I had a little 'play' with my new Stampscapes stamps (a Christmas present). I haven't really made any stamped scenes since all the cards I made in preparation for the workshops we did last summer using Lavinia stamps.

The stamps I was given were a wooden tree trunk stamp, a reindeer and a fence and I wanted to stick to these in my scene. I wanted it to be wintry, but at the same time with quite intense colour, so I  chose the rich browns and orange/yellow that you some times find when there is snow on the ground, but the day has been bright with sunshine. I always remember being very taken with a painting in one of dad's art books when I was a kid. It was a snowy woodland with the sky filtering a rich orange glow through the bare branches.

I used a brayer to create the background with Butterscotch Adirondack, Vintage Photo and Wild Honey distress inks and I used glossy stamping card. 

I made a mask with some copy paper to give a little hilly horizon for the snow.

once I had finished inking the background, I placed and stamped the Stag and then around him I stamped the trees twice. I took note from a Stampscapes tutorial and when I had inked the stag and the trees, I wiped across the bottom of the image to take off the hard edge and make it look more like the image is footed in the snow. Finally I stamped the fence, which has a grass base.

The good thing with these stamps is that they are quite heavily etched and there is little or no need for extra colour. I added some Aged Mahogany to the trunks.

Another tip on the tutorials was to take a cottonbud and dip in in some white ink - I used Brilliance Pigment, then I 'dusted' along the horizon where the snow meets the sky. This gives a softer effect and can be used when you want to create a mist. 

I then added the merest hint of Pine Needles distress ink along the bottom, just for a hint of grass showing through.

To finish I took a white pen and just dabbed dots in areas such as the tree trunks.

I die cut the image using a square Spellbinder die.

For the card (which is 6x6), I die cut an aperture in the front of the card using the same die, doubled with a second piece of card the same size as the front. I then embossed the front piece of card using a snow embossing folder by Sheena Douglass, which I got at the Exeter craft show last autumn.

Before adhering this to the front of the card I wound twine around the bottom three times and then tied a bow, adding a wooden button. Finally I stamped and added a sentiment.
