Highlighter pen tutorial - Thursday 9th August

Good morning friends!

I got a lot of crafting done yesterday, even though I had one eye on the show jumping for a while - and nails in my mouth! I don't think I wanted anything more in these Olympics than for Nick Skelton to win the individual Gold, but it wasn't to be, one little mistake and all the medal hopes disappeared. Honestly, it was like I used to be as a kid, my heart in my mouth at every jump our guys made!

Anyway friends,  as promised yesterday, I'm going to share with you how I created the background using a highlighter pen and some distress ink. I first saw it in Craft Stamper magazine, but have seen different versions of it in a few places since, so the technique has obviously been around a while. I like it because on the finished card, it almost looks as if there is a 'light' shining through. You can use any coloured highlighter, but so far my best results have been with yellow.

cover a piece of card with highlighter

Cover the whole piece with distress ink, dark colours work best

Sand the card lightly in one direction

Ink the piece of card all over again, heavier on the edges

Ink your image emboss if you wish

The card below is the one I made a few weeks ago...the colour was more intense and it took me a while to decide why...last time I used a matt card and for this demo I used stamping card with a smooth surface, so the ink was blending in more...plus the photos came out  a bit 'duller' than the card actually is!

Before I go, the Photo for a day - today the theme is messy, so here is my craft desk at the end of yesterday, honestly what am I  like? My defence is that yesterday was a particularly hectic day in the craft room and I was getting very excited watching the Olympics Show jumping!

This was after I'd tided a bit!

Thanks for stopping by and have a great day everyone!

  1. Morning Carole, a nice technique you have shared with us today, thank you, think I'll have a go at that (my list of 'to have a go at' is getting longer and longer lol). Your craft room looks familiar, I'm glad I'm not the only one who gets in a pickle after crafting lol! Have a good day, Christine H x

  3. TYhanks for the tip this morning Carole, and thanks for this. I've never seen it but it is a really interesting look. We crafters are obviously all the same. I am such a messy worker. John bought me a fridge magnet which is on my filing cabinet - " A tidy house is the sign of a wasted life." My house is actually ok (honestly!) but he couldn't find anything about a craft room! 4. Hi Carole,
Thanks for sharing your technique with us today, haven't seen this before.
Your photo is how my desk has looked for a couple of days. The last time I crafted I didn't have time to tidy up and then I was so busy I couldn't get near craftroom till today so it stayed a mess!! It's tidy (ish) now, I've just managed to make a card (yea, at last) and so there are a few bits and pieces on there.
Hope all is well with you.
